Vulvulator - Obscenario

Vulvulator are (or were) a pornogrind band from the incredibly-metal-as-f sounding Uzhgorod, which is in Ukraine. One of the greatest tragedies of the 21st century is that they only ever released one album and a couple of splits. Obscenario is a bizarre blast through the usual pastures fermenting in these particular genres (slam / pornogrind / brutal death metal), but the production style chosen by the band (or maybe the studio producer?) really adds an interesting twist to proceedings. The songs are led by the bass, which strong and prominent in the mix, followed up by the guitars and held together by the odd drum sound; an unique twist on the ol' tighter-than-your-average snare sound.

If I had to sum up Vulvulator in one song I believe I could easily do this with track two on this heffer; "Oestrum Ecstasy". It perfectly sums up what I mean when this band ride the slam/BDM sound but also incorporate an odd, bass-driven sound. Other highlights include "Boy In A Boat", "Horror Of P.M.T." and the quite-excellent cover of GUT's "Dead Girls Don't Say No". It frightens me that this album is nearly ten years old. Hopefully I will still be listening to pornogrind from beyond the grave, but we'll see.

Necrocannibalistic Vomitorium / Nunslaughter - Split 5"

This little 5" is my first ever experience with the band Nunslaughter. Sure, I've seen the name around for years but it just ended up as one of those things that I never got around to checking out. So, when they split with one of my favourite noisy acts Necrocannibalistic Vomitorium, it was the perfect opportunity to check 'em out once and for all, and I gotta say, I like what I hear! The track doesn't really last that long but it's nice and heavy with a clear and pummeling production. One day soon I'll have to do a little online rootling through some Nunslaughter stuff.

Necrocannibalistic Vomitorium have come leaps and bounds since first appearing on the noisecore/porngrind scene a good few years back. The recording here is crystal clear compared to some of their earlier efforts and not only that the playing is tighter than a slaughtered nun's crotch (pun obviously intended). The problem with 5"s is that they look so cool but they (rather obviously) don't hold much music. This shit is over and done with before I can fucking blink.

NxVx released this themselves on their prolific and rather excellent label Horns & Hoofs, whom I would definitely recommend checking out if you fancy getting a pile of NxVx stuff in one go.

Necrocannibalistic Vomitorium / SMG - Split 7"

SMG play super shady-sounding rehearsal room grind. At least, on this 7" they play that type of stuff. To be fair, the sound here is terrible. I dunno if the copy I have is warped or something but the guitar sounds absolutely hideous. It's hard to listen beyond that once you've noticed it, so I don't think I can fairly form an opinion on SMG from this 7" alone. I bought it because I want all the NxVx stuff anyway, so it's no big deal; SMG will get a further chance to impress me in the future (just what I need; more grind bands to impress me! Ha!).

Necrocannibalistic Vomitorium take a slightly different approach to usual on this split. Sure, it's still bass-driven grindcore fuckery but there seems to be a technicality to the songs that I have not noticed previously. The sound is still DIY as hell, but the bass-lines are a touch more engaging. The artwork is sexy as usual, and so is the transparent purple disc. You gotta love Horns & Hoofs Records; totally dedicated to the cause!

Can't find any links to stream this split, sorry all! To make up for it here is another sexy close up of that glorious trans-purple disc.

Ostie - Ostie

I bet you've all always wondered what happens when you apply the noisecore ethic to bedroom black metal? Well, if you have or not, Ostie are here to either brighten or ruin your day, depending on your outlook on life.  Combining the production values and attitude associated with noisecore into the elitist and grimm as fvck black metal sound, Ostie create one hell of a disorientated, erm...racket. The major let down for me is the vocals, which just don't work for me. The pitchshifted cleans (yes!) are pretty interesting, but the general voice-over is fairly laclustre.

Limited to 100 copies on Ukraine's Depressive Illusions Records, and also available on a limited CDr run in jet black DVD cases. Grimm as fukk. I don't really know who this music appeals to...and it's not really my cup of tea but it's cool as fuck and the package is really nice.

Enjoy the wonders of Ostie at the link below:
